Our Projects - Library Closed for Redevelopment Until Fall 2013

Our Projects

The Library Catalogue is on the Web

Previously, the Inmagic online catalogue was accessible only from the terminal in the Library.  Even though we are still closed and the collection is in secure storage, we have launched the new Online Public Access Catalogue or OPAC.  See "Search the Library" for a tutorial or just click on the link:

This Cloud-based Soutron Global catalogue will eventually incorporate all types of RCMI materials.  The collection will include not only books and digital books, but also photographs, archival material, moving images, videos and sound files, with the result of having just one place to look for all the materials held by the RCMI.   Stay tuned!

Donations to this project are still welcome and needed.

The Digitization of Materials

The Library plans to allow many out-of-copyright items from the collection, especially those too fragile for casual handling, to be digitized as flip books for research purposes.  This project is a joint venture of the RCMI Library and Internet Archive Canada housed at the University of Toronto.

Internet Archive specializes in non-destructive colour scanning.  Rather than a traditional scanner, a book is placed on a cradle and two high-performance cameras above shoot the pages.

The British Army Lists

Of great value to researchers is the Library collection of British and Canadian Officer Lists for the Army, Navy and Air Force.  The British Army List runs from 1758 to 1966, and the Canadian Army List from 1862 (Militia) to 1965.  We would like to make these available to the public, full-text and searchable, in the future.

To this end, the Internet Archive has made the RCMI copy of the British Army List of 1812 available as a sample flip book.  It is full-text, searchable and printable.  All we need is the funds to go forward.
